Back in August, I had an extended opportunity to shoot portraits and in-studio appearances at SiriusXM Studios located in the heart of Midtown Manhattan. SiriusXM has a lot of diverse talent drop by including actors, comedians, bands and a whole lot more. I thought it’d be interesting to share all of the rappers, rockers and other musicians that I got in front of my lens during my week-long residency. Artists here include White Denim, Kreayshawn, 4count, 2 Chainz, Suicide Silence, Marina Diamandis, the Braxton family, Nick Cannon, Daniel Powter, Chris Rene, Kevin Jonas, Goapele and Kottonmouth Kings.
I did some research before this gig by checking out work previously shot at SiriusXM Studios. Two things jumped out at me…
1) Everything was done with on-camera flash. There’s nothing wrong with that per-say–especially in fast-paced environments–but in order to achieve flattering lighting, you’ve gotta get your flash off-camera.
2) There was a small space with a backdrop. I knew that there would be opportunities for quick portraits, and I guessed that there was probably enough room to set up one big light.
My lighting gear included the Elinchrom Ranger Quadra RX power pack with the Rotalux Octa. My exposure was 1/160 and ISO 500 at f/11.
