Legendary piano man Billy Joel played his record-crushing 32 consecutive show of his residency at Madison Square Garden.
In my book, as far as songwriters and performers go, Billy Joel is in peerless class of rock royals among the likes of Paul McCartney, Elton John and Bob Dylan. It was a thrill to finally shoot one his hometown shows.
Photographers were instructed to shoot the first two songs from house left up near the front of the stage. It was much closer than shooting from the soundboard, but it meant we were shooting across the piano. Not exactly the best angle. Also Billy’s piano rotated around during the second song so his back was turned to us. Still the lighting was great and I came away happy with my overall take.
I used my Nikon D750 paired with a 70-200mm VR II f/2.8 lens + 1.7x teleconverter. My exposure hovered around 1/400 and f/ 4.8 at ISO 1600.by
