My first show of 2011 was also my first assignment for The New York Times. It was an honor, a huge personal accomplishment and the high-point of my photography career thus far.
Feinstein’s is a very intimate nightclub with room for only about 70 patrons and no photo pit. Photographers were instructed to shoot the first three songs from the back of the room. In this type of scenario, when you can’t move around for different looks, the impact of your images relies heavily on the expressiveness of the performer. Luckily, Lorna kept things interesting with dramatic gestures and big smiles.
